1) Color code your ads to match your web site palette *exactly*. Don't use frames around your ads. Instead, in the AdSense code generation interface, make sure you choose the same color as your page background for the ad frame and the ad background.

When choosing the ad heading colors, match them to the *exact* color of your page headings. Use the exact same ad background shade as your page background. Use the exact same ad text font and color as the text on your pages.

Near enough is NOT good enough. If you can't quite get the color matching right, use Google's built in color palette together with the RGB to HEX or vice versa color converter on this page - http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/Guide/Style. That handy little tool was a life saver for me.

This is probably the one single tweak that made the most difference to my commission levels.

2) Try not to use the traditional horizontal banner style or leaderboard image ads because people are blind to them.

3) Use Google's own AdSense optimization tips at https://www.google.com/support/adsense/bin/static.py?page=tips.html and visual heat map to assist you in deciding where on your page to place your AdSense ad code.

4) Research competitive keywords using a keyword research tool such as Keyword Discovery. Targeting popular keywords should trigger AdSense ads on your pages that utilize those keywords. The more popular the keyword or phrase, the higher AdWords advertisers are generally willing to pay per click for it so the higher your commission on those clicks.

5) Incorporate the AdSense code into your page so that the ads look like a regular part of your site.

6) Use Google's new 4 and 5 link ad units wherever possible. They seem to have a much higher Click Through Rate (CTR) than regular ad styles. You can view all the AdSense ad formats at https://www.google.com/adsense/adformats.

7) Place arrows or images next to your ads to draw attention to them.

8) Use the full allowance of multiple AdSense ads on each of your pages - 3 regular AdSense ads, plus 1 link unit. Use careful placement of these ads so they blend into your site and don't distract from your content.

  • 1 horizontal 4 link ad unit towards the top of the page under the first paragraph.
  • 1 vertical skyscraper text ad unit about halfway down the left hand side under "Sponsor Links".
  • 1 vertical skyscraper image ad unit down the left hand side under "Sponsor Links".
  • 1 horizontal text banner unit at the bottom of the page with images above each ad to draw attention to them.

You can also include 1 AdSense referral button in addition to the 3 other units.

9) Tailor your page content to a particular niche or focus. Page content that is tailored towards a specific theme is more likely to trigger AdWords ads that closely match the content and are therefore more likely to interest your visitors and inspire them to click.

Don't create pages merely for the sake of placing AdSense ads. Visitors (and search engines) can see through this ruse in an instant.

10) Use custom Ad Channels for each of your ad placements, for example, "Top 5 Link Unit Blue Palette" or "Left Side Navigation Image Skyscraper" etc. Tweak, track and measure the success of each of these custom channels so you know what gives you the highest CTR. Some ad formats and colors will work better than others, but you won't know which until you test, test and test some more! ( addme.com )

Facebook ranks first in display ads

Facebook ranks first in display ads - Facebook has become an online advertising magnet, capturing the greatest number of display ads of any Internet publishing site in the third quarter, according to ComScore.

In the third quarter, Facebook grabbed 23 percent of all Internet display ads, or 297 billion ad impressions, which was more than the total display ads on Yahoo, Microsoft, Fox and Google sites combined. But that doesn’t mean Facebook made the most money from display ads, according to the ComScore report.

Facebook ads are generally cheaper than display ads sold on traditional Web portals like Yahoo, according to Evercore Partners analyst Ken Sena in a report by Reuters. One industry source said Yahoo is known to make the most from online display ads.

The effective CPM (cost per thousand impressions) for Facebook's U.S. display ads is roughly $1, compared with the $3 CPM for display ads on Yahoo's family of Web sites in the United States, Sena said.

The growth in advertising shows the value of Facebook’s social network to advertisers who want to tailor ads to users who are constantly feeding new information about themselves to the site. Facebook doesn’t share personally identifiable information about their users, it says. And lawmakers have introduced legislation that could curb an advertiser’s ability to serve up ads based on Internet user activity. (Disclosure: Washington Post Co. Chairman Donald E. Graham is a member of Facebook's board.)

Overall, the online advertising display market is up 22 percent compared with a year ago.

Jeff Hackett, ComScore’s senior vice president, said in a release that the growth comes from the ability to target ads, or “buy specific audiences,” and that the site has improved the creativity and formatting of the ads.

Top advertisers – cellphone providers AT&T and Verizon -- bought a combined 35 billion ads. Scott Trade bought about 14.9 billion ads, and cable industry buster Netflix bought 9.5 billion ads in the quarter. ( washingtonpost.com )

Will Google be Doing Transformative Acquisition ?

Will Google be Doing Transformative Acquisition ?. Google Inc.'s success has left the Internet search leader sitting on a pile of cash — $22 billion at the end of September. Executives say they are ready to spend more money to take advantage of what they believe will be even better days ahead.

That will include buying other companies, although perhaps not on the scale of Google's $1.76 billion acquisition of YouTube in 2006 or $3.2 billion purchase of DoubleClick last year. Google CEO Eric Schmidt provided some insights into his thinking Thursday in a third-quarter earnings conference call with investors.

QUESTION: Will Google be doing a large transformative acquisition or will its policy still be to make small technology-oriented acquisitions?

RESPONSE: The way we think about acquisitions is we have historically done an acquisition perhaps one a month or so. And those are typically small and they are typically complete in offering. They are typically technology-intensive. They are not very expensive in the scheme of things ...

We're certainly looking for larger businesses to buy, but in those cases there would have to be some specific — some major, major user base that we do not currently have access to, and so they are going to be quite infrequent.

So if you think about it, our two largest have been DoubleClick and YouTube, both of which look as though they are going to be incredibly successful. But the integration costs, the acquisition costs itself was quite significant.

So those will be relatively rare and if I were to estimate the frequency, it's hard to say, but it's certainly not monthly. Maybe every year or two. But certainly not every month.

Success with PPC ( Pay Per Click )

Success with PPC ( Pay Per Click ). Whether you're looking to do Paid Search Advertising yourself or to hire someone to do that for you - you should know what makes a Pay Per Click campaign successful - or you will end up suffering.

Paid search advertising may look deceptively easy to do. Countless times small business owners decide (and correctly so) that PPC is going to do wonders for their business and 'dive' right into it...

Unfortunately most of them don't really educate themselves enough on what to do and how to do it, and then they end up spending a helluva lot of money, with little to no results. Next they declare that Paid Search Marketing doesn't work and then they're out!

Alternatively, the small business owner hires an overpaid, over-promising PPC management firm, and lets them do whatever they like - not knowing what to be aware of in order to make sure he's getting the best possible results for the best price...

Well - despite the doom and gloom scenarios above, I'm here to tell you that PPC works for most businesses!

It works very well, and can be one of the best, quickest, most cost effective and best tracked medium of advertising/promotion there ever was... Sure, there are other ways you can market your business, but if you know how to, and if you want almost immediate results that are fully tracked - then PPC can't be beaten.

OK, let's get to the top 10 essentials of Pay Per Click marketing:

1. Know your market place

It's as obvious as daylight, but people still go into PPC without doing their research. Bear in mind that you may know your market place offline, but when you consider the internet - it may be a whole different environment. So make sure you look into it - even if you have to pay for professional research - it will be worth your while.

If you're letting an agency manage your paid search, then make sure you ask them about your market - make sure they have done their homework thoroughly.

2. Know your target audience

Again an obvious one - and yet again people don't do this step properly. Don't just list out a bunch of demographics about your prospective customers. Get into character - engineer 'real-life' people profiles (avatars), describing everything about them.

Creating about 3 customer avatars for your business, will help you understand your customers, and thus you'll be able to anticipate how they behave. Knowing how they are likely to behave, will allow you to setup a VERY effective PPC campaign process, that will guarantee you success.

Remember - your customer just wants to feel understood, then if your product/service is good - they will buy.

3. Know what you want your visitor to do

In other words decide - do you want a prospect visiting your site to:

  • call you to make an appointment?
  • email you with more info about themselves, before setting up a consultation?
  • click on the "Buy Now" button on your landing page?
  • sign up to your membership site?
  • sign up to your free newsletter?
  • download a free report?

The clearer you are about what you want visitors to do, the easier it will be to entice them to do just that. If you don't tell your prospects what it is they need to do to progress this visit to something that is of benefit to them, they will click away, most likely to never be seen again...

4. Know how they look for you & your product - i.e. understand searcher intent

This one's not so obvious. Only very good paid search marketers know that keywords have different intent behind them. In other words, if a searcher on Google types in "running shoes" they are highly likely to be doing some preliminary research on what types of running shoes there are.

If the same searcher typed in "running shoes reviews" - then they are likely to be still researching - but they now know that they will buy - when they find the shoe that appeals to them.

A prospect with 'buying' intent, however, will likely type in "buy asics gel kayano running shoes" or "asics gel kayano stockists". You get the idea...

5. Start small - grow big later

This simply means that it is better to find the most suitable keyword phrases for your business, and run with that small group first. This will allow you to test the 'waters' and it will help you keep control of your budget.

Later on, when you know what works and what doesn't you can add other phrases to your heart's content.

6. Split test your ads

It is amazing how many people don't take advantage of this feature on Google AdWords. Split - testing will give you a constant way of improving on your ads. Your ad is the 'window' to your sales... so you cannot afford not to be constantly trying to make it better converting than before.

7. Use landing pages (LP)

Landing pages are powerful when using them correctly. They allow you complete control of what your visitor experiences. I always recommend that if you are only wanting one result from your prospect you should use LPs. But if your resources and knowledge are limited, then at least make sure you are leading the searcher to the most search-relevant page you have on your site.

8. Track everything

This says it all - even if you don't know how to, or with what - find someone that can help you. Outsource this job, or simply head over to Google and read all there is on their Analytics service. In some cases this is perfectly sufficient.

9. Listen to your stats

Once you have your tracking working, make sure you look at your stats to see the results. I recommend you look at them once a day in the beginning - depending on the size of your campaign, the amount of traffic your keywords are getting, and the amount of money you've budgeted to spend.

Once your campaign is working and making you profit, you can start looking at it less often, but at least once a week. Also make sure to optimize it regularly on the basis of your stats.

10. Learn consistently and constantly

Learn from your successes, your failures, your competitors' successes and their failures too... I have a document template that I use for all my campaigns called - Lessons Learned. It's only through experience that you will be able to progress and optimize any paid search campaign.

Well - hopefully you'll find the above list of PPC essentials very useful. Of course there are a lot of other important points to consider, like daily budget, competitive research, and return on investment requirements, but the above 10 will be able to start you off in a very strong way.

Bear in mind that whether you're managing your own PPC campaigns, or you're hiring a professional to do it - you can use the list above to make sure you're getting the best out of your campaigns.
